Woman shocked by details on “revenge porn” website

A woman was shocked to discover her personal details on a website listing names of women whom men discussed about assault and rape.

Becky, who is not her real name, found her details and place on a so-called “revenge porn” forum, along with those of thousands of others.

The 22-year-old from Middlesbrough found that words were uploaded in a coded way to avoid search engines.

The website, which the BBC does not call, said it had removed illegal content.

Becky found her name and those of three of her friends were posted on the site, along with other women and girls from Teesside and around the world.

She wrote about her shock on a Twitter post that went viral and thousands of other women who were alerted to the site found videos of rape, posts evaluating female bodies and pictures of child abuse.

Men could also ask for details about women in their area.

Becky told BBC Tees: “I joined three other people; two of them are my best friends, another is a girl I went to school with, and we all lived within five minutes of each other.

“So obviously there’s someone we know who asked for our details and pictures of us.”

“It’s like, ‘Do we see this person every day? Do we talk to this person?’ And now I posted it on Twitter, their comments [on the site] have been deleted.

“It’s as if they’ve seen it and they don’t want to be caught. It’s scary.

“It’s been almost 10 years. It goes back to 2010. I called the police and they said they can’t do anything about it because they don’t know who owns the site.”

The site promised VIP members “more than one terabyte of porn that grows daily.” The BBC understands that it is based in Finland.

Thousands of women have now signed a petition calling for it to be closed after Becky alerted it.

“It’s absolutely massive and the police do nothing about it,” she said. “The police intend to be here to protect you. I can’t believe people are actually being tortured.

“I talked to a few girls, one was 13 at the time her photos were put in, this is the youngest I’ve talked to; I know there are girls my age, it’s between 13 and 25 years old.”

The BBC emailed the operators of the site, and they replied: “All posts to our services are posted by our anonymous users around the world not by [site name].

“We carry out daily active moderation and have clear rules about what may be posted, we also offer removal forms in the rare cases for content that is allegedly illegal or violates copyright rules.

“Because we have a worldwide audience that has 28 million users a year across our networks, we strive to ensure that any posts that break the rules are removed in a timely manner.”

Det Insp Jim Forster of Cleveland Police said: “The offense [of revenge porn] relates to the person doing the sharing of the images, we can arrest that person, they can be treated and they can get up to two years in prison. . “

He said if a case involves a large company like Facebook or Snapchat, they would generally comply with requests to downsize material, but lesser-known websites, or those run by criminals, might tend to ignore the police.

“It’s unlikely we could have tracked who owns the site if it is overseas,” he said. “The reality is that these images are deleted, it is impossible.”
