Titanfall 2 goes free-to-play on Steam, but only temporarily

The next season of Apex Legends, dubbed “Legacy”, is on the horizon and, as the name suggests, the Apex Legends tradition is revisiting some characters from its past. Specifically, we saw references to several Titanfall 2 characters in Apex Legends Legacy season marketing, but if you really want to see where it all started, there’s no better way to do it than playing Titanfall 2. Fortunately, Respawn made it particularly easy this weekend if you’re a PC gamer.

Titanfall 2 became free to play on Steam over the weekend, giving interested players a chance to check it out without having to shell out money to buy it first. We recently saw a number of Steam promotions that allow players to keep free games permanently as soon as they are claimed, but it is important to note that this is not one of those promotions.

Instead, this is just a free temporary weekend. Titanfall 2 is free to download and play on Steam now until Monday, May 3 at 10 am PDT / 1 pm EDT. As soon as Monday morning arrives, the game will no longer be free and you will have to buy it if you want to continue playing.

Unfortunately, it appears that there are no promotions on Titanfall 2 to accompany this promotion, which suggests that it is more about promoting the new Apex Legends season. Still, Titanfall 2 Ultimate Edition currently costs $ 24.99, and it is worth mentioning that it is included in EA Play, which is available through Steam and the Xbox Game Pass for PC.

This may be good news for Titanfall 2 fans who are already playing through Steam, because this weekend, at least, means that the multiplayer lobbies are likely to be packed with players. It’s not hard to imagine the free-to-play promotion taking at least some new players beyond the weekend as well, so if you’re looking to get into the game with Titanfall 2, now is the time to do it.
