Slingbox discontinued, services sunsetting

Slingbox will no longer function as of November 9, 2022. Sling Media, a DISH subsidiary, announced that it was closing the store on November 9, 2020. At that time, they said that all Slingbox servers would be permanently offline 24 months later the date of the discontinued ad (which is again November 9, 2020). When November arrives in 2022, ALL Slingbox devices and services “will become inoperable”.

According to the announcement, Sling said that “most Slingbox models will continue to function normally, but the number of devices with support for viewing will steadily decrease as versions of the SlingPlayer applications become out of date and / or lose compatibility” This is true for every Sling device you have ever owned or (except madness) you will have in the future.

In a general question and answer session posted by Sling Media, the termination of services was explained. “We had to make room for new innovative products so that we can continue to serve our customers in the best possible way.” This may seem like an absolutely silly way of saying that there will be different types of Sling products in the future, but the company has gone on to say that it will not launch any new products at point-blank range.

Slingbox products from Sling Media will be discontinued. Sling Media is owned by DISH. It is entirely possible that some of the features included in Sling products in the past will be moved to DISH products in the future. But don’t hold your breath.

If you have somehow managed to purchase a Slingbox product at any time recently, Sling suggested that “The Slingbox warranty is 1 year” and that “if you purchased your Slingbox from an authorized dealer in the United States or Canada and have a copy of receipt, your warranty will be covered by the original terms and conditions. “

Slingbox will not ship any products from this point forward. According to this week’s release, “most authorized dealers have been out of stock for a few years”.

If you are using any type of Sling product now, be it hardware or software, we recommend that you stop as soon as possible. This is a period of time when the end of product development (especially software) means that malicious parties can potentially gain a foothold in the security of such services. As Sling is shutting down services, they will be much less concerned with users’ concerns than they would be in the distant past. It’s time to look for alternatives to the Slingbox – starting with NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV.
