Award-winning historic author Hilary Mantel said the monarchy cannot last longer than Prince William when she takes the position of the queen.
The British royal family is probably in its “final game” – and it probably will not “last longer than” Prince William’s eventual reign as king, according to a UK author and award-winning lady.
“I think it’s the end of the game. I don’t know how long the institution will last, ”said Hilary Mantel, author of The Mirror and the Light, to the UK Telegraph.
“I’m not sure if it will last longer than William. So, I think it will be their last great era ”, predicted the historical fiction writer, who was awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006 and made a lady by Prince Charles in 2014.
Mantel wondered if the queen was now “the only person who really believes in the monarchy”.
“I would like the Queen to feel able to abdicate … I understand that she thinks of it as a sacred task, which you simply cannot abdicate, while the rest of us think of it as a job, which you should be able to to retire, ”said the author of Wolf Hall.
“She believes that she cannot help being a monarch – she has made these promises to God.
“It is a cliché to say, but what a lonely position to be in. It is a conflict, because most of the world sees the royal family as a branch of show business. And I am sure that this is a long way from the Queen’s own thought. “
Instead, the monarchy has now become a “self-punishing institution,” said Mantel, the first woman to win the Booker Prize twice, an annual award for the best romance of the year in the UK.
“No other family should parade a very elderly and newly widowed lady in front of the TV cameras, but it is a given that is going to happen,” she said of the moving images of the queen sitting alone at her husband’s funeral, the prince Philip.
“Just as it is taken for granted that a new royal mother will appear radiant on the hospital steps the day after giving birth. There is no legitimate public interest behind this,” she said.
Mantel declined to comment on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview on Oprah about the royal family.
“I wouldn’t judge them. And I don’t believe that we will ever really know what happened there. So, I just wish you all the best, ”she said.
