The ultimate Ethereum miner
Chinese miner Bitmain has released a teaser of the company’s future Antminer E9 Ethereum miner. The company said that the Antminer E9 would be released very soon, although it did not set a definite date.
The Antminer E9 can be the answer to players’ prayers. If cryptocurrency miners join this new ASIC, they may give up on buying Nvidia’s Ampere offerings and maybe, just maybe, players will finally be able to buy a video card for games. The shelves will not magically fill, as cryptocurrency miners are not the only cause of the shortage of video cards; we can also blame the pandemic for that too. Perhaps we could see more stocks on the market, however.
The Antminer E9 reportedly offers an Ethereum hash rate of up to 3 GH / s, equivalent to 32 Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 video cards (Ampere) mining in unison. If Bitmain delivers on its promise, Antminer E9 will be the fastest ASIC miner available and will even surpass Linzhi’s Phoenix Ethash ASIC miner, which offers up to 2,600 MH / s.
Bitmain did not reveal many details about the Antminer E9, except that it consumes 2,556 W and exhibits an energy efficiency of 0.85 J / M. Therefore, the Antminer E9 is not only faster than the Phoenix miner, but also more efficient in terms of energy. For comparison, the Phoenix miner draws 3,000 W, which means that the Antminer E9 consumes 14.8% less power.
Obviously, a mining ASIC of the caliber of 32 GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards will not come cheap. Current speculation on Twitter is that the Antminer E9 could be sold for more than $ 20,000 easily. The Linzhi miner in Phoenix sells for $ 11,300 to $ 13,700. Even with that $ 30,000, the Antminer E9 could be a very attractive option for mining farms, as GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards start at $ 2,500 today, and buying 32 of them amounts to an impressive $ 80,000.
On the other hand, Nvidia is unlikely to be very pleased with Antminer E9 news as chip maker Ampere video cards are selling like hotcakes. Let’s not forget that between $ 100 to $ 300 million of Nvidia’s fourth quarter revenue came only from cryptomination sales.
In addition, Nvidia recently launched its Cryptocurrency Mining Processor (CMP) products that focus on Ethereum mining. Just over a week ago, Nvidia updated its first-quarter CMP sales forecast to a peak of $ 150 million, three times higher than its original estimate.
Antminer E9 is unlikely to affect Nvidia’s crypto mining business unless Bitmain can produce the Ethereum miner on a large scale. It will certainly be a challenge, given the global scarcity of electronic components that affects all sectors.
