Michael Jordan says he will donate $ 100 million to groups that fight for racial equality and social justice.
The NBA legend said in a statement that he and his Jordan Brand would distribute the money in 10 years.
The money will go to various organizations in an attempt to combat “ingrained racism”.
It is the result of protests that broke out in the United States and around the world after the death of George Floyd, when he was stopped by the police.
Floyd, an unarmed black man, died on May 25, after a white police officer, charged with murder, knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes.
“We announce a joint commitment by Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand to donate $ 100 million over the next 10 years. We must join forces with the community, government and civic leaders to create a lasting impact together,” said Craig Williams, President of Jordan. Brand.
“There is still more work to do to make a real impact on the black community. We take responsibility.”
Speaking last week, Jordan said he was “deeply saddened, truly sore and angry”.
“I see and feel everyone’s pain, indignation and frustration,” he added. “I defend those who call racism and violence ingrained against people of color in our country.
“We’ve had enough.”
