As scattered celebrations of fireworks began in crowd-less cities on the east coast on Saturday night, Kanye West, the controversial rapper and fashion mogul, decided to go on Twitter and let the world know that he would be running for the United States presidency in 2020.
This is not the first time that Kanye discusses the race in 2020, but it is by far his most official statement. To this day, we all thought the election in November would be between Kanye’s President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, but perhaps this Saturday night surprise will change the game – for better or for worse.
Most likely, however, Kanye West is trying to promote his new album (called God of the Country, making it even more remarkable that he dropped the name of God in his tweet) and possibly some of his very expensive clothes.
To make the evening’s announcement even stranger, billionaire and famous Twitter troll Elon Musk immediately decided to “endorse” Kanye on Twitter. It should be noted that the two recently left and the chances that this is just a big game for them are very high.
This likely trick may have been more fun in the past. But as it stands, we are in the midst of historic protests for racial justice and we are still facing the real danger of a global pandemic, which continues to devastate the country. Nearly 130,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, and cases in much of the United States continue to rise.
If Kanye’s supposed entry into the race really changes the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, it is absolutely what we deserve.
But it’s 2020 and I’m tired. We are all tired. So, let’s just hope it disappears faster than the smoke after the Fourth of July fireworks.
