This week, Fossil staff unveiled a new set of smartwatches aimed at simplicity, beauty and functionality. It seems that, at this point in the history of the smartwatch, Fossil’s realized that its best bet to face the titan that is Apple and its Apple Watch is to make a solid and reliable experience that does not break the bank. With that in mind, they unveiled the Fossil Gen 5 LTE smartwatch.
The Fossil Gen 5 LTE smartwatch is “exclusively for Android phones with Verizon technology, only in the USA”. That’s the message of Fossil … which is strange because they clearly work with the Google WearOS app for Android 6+ (excluding the Go edition) and iOS 12+. It is probably the LTE part and some functionality is limited to Verizon.
There are two main types, both with a 45 MM stainless steel case and an 18 MM interchangeable bracelet. These watches are equipped with Google Wear OS and the internal Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 SoC. These watches have 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage and a 1.28 ″ AMOLED / 416 x 416 / 328ppi screen.
There are two buttons and a rotary home button, as well as a touchscreen and the ability to work with voice commands (via Google Assistant). There is a speaker system, vibration feedback and Bluetooth 4.2 LE connectivity, GPS, NFC, wi-fi and cellular (hence LTE).
This watch has an accelerometer, altimeter, compass, gyroscope, external infrared sensor and PPG heart rate. There is also a USB cable with a magnetic connector for charging.
There is a Blush Silicone version and a Black version, both of which cost approximately $ 349 USD. Extra handles cost between $ 20.30 and $ 49 from Fossil. This watch is expected to be shipped around January 20, 2021.
