The voice actress for the character Abby in The Last of Us Part II revealed on Twitter that she was receiving death threats, further showing the toxicity surrounding Naughty Dog’s divisive game.
Laura Bailey, who also voiced Mary Jane Watson in Marvel Spider-Man and will dub the Black Widow in Marvel’s Avengers, posted screenshots of the messages she received for what Abby did in The Last of Us Part II.
Without revealing any spoilers, The Last of Us Part II presents a dark and controversial storyline that aims to leave a deep emotional impact for players. Integral to this objective is the character of Abby, who acts as Ellie’s main antagonist. Unfortunately, it seems that some people are not taking the story well and vented their frustrations against Bailey.
The people behind the threats apparently think that Bailey is really Abby, and that she herself was behind the character’s actions in a video game. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn summed up the confused mentality these people have against Bailey for simply doing his job as a voice actress.
Other people who expressed support for Bailey amid the abominable threats include Ashley Johnson, Ellie’s voice actress, and Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s vice president and creative director.
Meanwhile, amid all the controversy, The Last of Us Part II has been a huge commercial success, setting a new record for launch sales of 4 million units in the first three days. The game won the best-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive title of all time, earning the Marvel Spider-Man crown.
