CITY OF MAN AT THE EDGE OF TITLE GLORY AFTER THE PALACE

Pep Guardiola’s team has a 13-point lead and will be crowned champion if runner-up Manchester United lose to Liverpool on Sunday.

LONDON – Manchester City are close to the Premier League title after Sergio Aguero and Ferran Torres sealed the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s team has a 13-point lead and will be crowned champion if runner-up Manchester United lose to Liverpool on Sunday.

After a warm first half in South London, Aguero – the architect of so many great moments in City’s history – should open the scoring with a typically lethal finish.

Torres killed Palace two minutes later, with City winning their 11th consecutive away win in the Premier League, equaling the English Premier League record.

Even if United do not slip against Liverpool at Old Trafford, City still have four games to guarantee the victory they need to secure the title, starting with the home game next Saturday against Chelsea.

It is a question of when City will not add the Premier League to the League Cup they won against Tottenham in April.

“We can start to think about it and put it in the fridge. The Premier League is already there, in our hands. We need another victory,” said Guardiola.

“I am absolutely delighted with this after the Champions League. We couldn’t play with too much pace. We fought a little, but in the second half we deserved it.

“I will check the game against Liverpool. It is in our hands and now we are going to give everything to win PSG.

City were weakening in 14th place at the end of November, but a scorching race has since led them to the brink of a third title in four seasons.

Treble chasers can also add the Champions League to that bid.

On Tuesday, City will try to reach their first Champions League final by defending a 2-1 lead in the second leg of the semifinals against Paris Saint Germain.

This was City’s sixth consecutive game outside Etihad Stadium and, when they return to Manchester to play against PSG, they will have made more than 3,500 miles on the road in just three weeks.

Guardiola believes that the strenuous schedule has made City’s success this season “extra special” and this victory was yet another tribute to his tenacious attitude.

GUARDIOLA JOY

Rodri and João Cancelo kept their seats when Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling entered.

Aguero was just making his sixth start in the league in a season full of injuries for City’s record scorer, who announced his departure in the summer.

All the changes left City disjointed in a troubled first half.

Ederson had to make a superb save to keep City level when he reached out to block Christian Benteke’s close-range shot with his legs.

It was the first time in 21 games that City failed to shoot on goal in the first half.

But City is too powerful to be dominated for a long time and played much more intensely after the break.

Aguero was anonymous for long periods, but turned the years back to break the deadlock after 57 minutes.

Running for Mendy’s pass, Aguero touched the Palace area before hitting a volley on the roof of the net 10 meters away.

“What a goal, what an action, what a player, what a man. I am incredibly delighted that he is back,” said Guardiola.

“He’s going to like the last few games. I’m in love as a person. He’s an incredible guy.”

Aguero’s fourth goal of the season – his 258 for the club – put City back on track and Torres extended the lead 84 seconds later.

Aguero, Jesus and Sterling exchanged a flurry of passes, launching Torres for a good low finish from the edge of the area.

Guardiola’s celebration with fists raised underlined the magnitude of the moment as City neared the title’s last triumph.
