In May, we learned that a TV show based on Joe Exotic, the subject of the popular Netflix documentary Tiger King, was being purchased with Nicolas Cage for the lead role. Go forward a few months and it has been confirmed that Amazon Studios has contracted the series for the company’s Prime Video streaming service. As expected, the show will have a script.
The show was first reported by Variety in May; has now confirmed that Amazon Studios is on board with the show alongside CBS TV Studios and Imagine Television. The scripted show will be based on Leif Reigstad’s Texas Monthly article entitled Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey into the World of a Man Who Has Become Wild.
The audience was first introduced to the man better known as Joe Exotic through the Netflix document series Tiger King. Given the huge popularity of this program and the memes it has generated, it shouldn’t be surprising that another service wanted to double-tap the character to gain popularity. Who better to play such an eccentric person than Nicolas Cage?
According to the latest report, the scripted TV show will involve Cage as Joe Shreibvogel and chronicle his descent to become Joe Exotic, the keeper behind a park in Oklahoma. Make Good Content’s Paul Young will serve as executive producer alongside Dan Lagana, among others, who is also the series creator and screenwriter.
If you feel like you’ve heard this ad before, you’ve probably heard it, just by a different service. We heard earlier that NBC’s Peacock and USA Network are working on a similar series based on the character Carol Baskin, which will be played by Kate McKinnon. It is not clear when any of these programs will debut.
