A man was accused of a fatal shootout in a busy downtown Vancouver area last weekend.
Around 8:30 pm on April 17, there were shots in front of Cardero’s restaurant in Coal Harbor. Police arrived to find Harpreet Singh Dhaliwal, 31, dead at the scene.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) announced today (April 24) that François Joseph Gauthier, 51, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and one charge of possession of a prohibited or restricted loaded firearm (without authorization or license)
Gauthier is in custody until his next hearing in Vancouver’s provincial court on Thursday (April 29).
Since the Coal Harbor shooting, there have been other fatal shootings in Metro Vancouver.
At 6:30 pm on April 19, 20-year-old Bailey McKinney was shot and killed at Town Center Park in Coquitlam.
Then, at 9 am on April 21, a man was shot dead in front of the Langley Sportsplex, which is frequented by families and children. On April 22, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) declared the victim to be Todd Gouwenberg, 46, of Langley.
IHIT Insp. Michelle Tansey said that Gouwenberg was involved in gangs and that the shooting was a target, but that investigators still do not know the reason for the shooting.
Investigators have yet to say whether a connection has been established between these shootings.
