The next generation of Apple TV may finally come with a new remote

If you’re not a fan of the current Apple TV remote, you’re certainly not alone. The Apple TV Siri Remote has sparked considerable controversy and divided the Apple TV faithful, but it may not be long before we see Apple shake things up a bit. There are rumors that the company is developing a new remote control for the next generation of Apple TV, and although details about the remote control are scarce at the moment, we are confident that the words “new remote control” will make some ears pop. animate anyway.

Today’s rumor comes from 9to5Mac folks, who spoke to unidentified sources familiar with Apple’s plans for the new remote. These sources tell 9to5Mac that the new Apple TV remote control has the internal code name “B519”, which in itself is a rather innocuous detail. Compare that to the current Siri Remote internal code name – B439 – and just the difference in names alone suggests that Apple may be preparing for a major update.

Unfortunately for us, those were all the details that the 9to5Mac sources revealed about this new Apple TV remote. We have no details on how the aesthetics of the remote control can change, nor do we know which buttons can be included or excluded. Will the new Apple TV remote control come with a touchpad like the current one, or will Apple replace it with a more traditional remote control design? These are burning questions to which, unfortunately, we do not have the answers at the moment.

Still, there have been some rumors that suggest that Apple is planning a next generation Apple TV, and it is no exaggeration to expect a redesigned remote control to go with it. The big question is when Apple can unveil this new Apple TV. Earlier today, the company announced the dates for WWDC 2021, but software is always the main focus at that specific event. Apple, of course, provoked and even announced new hardware at WWDC before, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the 2021 edition came and went without the introduction of a new Apple TV.

This may mean that we will be waiting until autumn – during the Apple iPhone reveal event – for this particular announcement. We’ll see what happens at WWDC and beyond, and we’ll be on the lookout for any information leaks on this new Apple TV remote, so stay tuned for more information.
