The Huawei Mate X2 folding phone has some durability surprises

Although it has the most attention, Samsung is hardly the only one to manufacture foldable phones. There is, for example, Royole’s FlexPai and, despite supply problems, Huawei’s Mate X. The latter has just had its true second generation model, which goes in the opposite direction of the “external” fold of the first Huawei Mate X. The design, however, is not the only thing that has changed with the Mate X2 and, fortunately, the changes that come with the redesign have also made it much more durable in the process.

To be fair, the first Huawei Mate X did not have exactly the same disastrous problems as the first Galaxy Fold exactly because of its external fold. The screen was, of course, even more fragile than the normal screen on your phone, and this design also brought its own problems. Dropping the Huawei Mate X, open or closed, was equally catastrophic.

With the Huawei Mate X2, the company switched to an innie fold, like the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 2. Although more expensive, the new foldable did more than just update specifications, but also added some measure of redundancy and reliability . After all, you still have a screen outside, even in the worst case scenario, where the main folding screen breaks.

This flexible canvas is scratched with sharp nails, but sand and stones are surprisingly harmless. The Mate X2’s hinge design remarkably didn’t let the sand out after being folded, and JerryRigEverything speculates that it wouldn’t let the dust in either. Most importantly, the phone does not even flex when it is forcibly folded to the other side, an effect of the hinge and the two halves locking on each other.

The Huawei Mate X2 turned out to be a very durable phone, despite being a generally fragile foldable phone. There is still a lot of room for improvement on the screen, but every year it seems to push technology and materials in that direction. It will be interesting to see if the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which may be announced in July, has more to offer in this regard and whether it will be more affordable than a $ 3,000 foldable phone without the Google Play Store that you cannot easily buy outside of China. .
