If you’ve been on the internet for the past two months, you’ve probably heard about GameStop’s craze and seen Stonks Guy at another point. Dummy part of crash test and investor part of the stock market, the Stonks Guy has been virtually unavoidable recently, and now it looks like he’s coming to Fortnite. Apparently, April Fool’s Day has Epic in a very strange mood, as he put a surprise skin of Stonks Guy in the Fortnite store.
Fortnite’s version of Stonks Guy is called Diamond Hanz, apparently, and while that sounds like a perfect April Fool’s joke, the skin is actually in the store right now. For just 1,200 V-Bucks, you can ensure that the GameStop meme lives on forever,
Although the Stonks Guy has been around for years, the arrival of this skin is clearly a reference to the subreddit WallStreetBets and its GameStop shopping spree earlier this year. In very general terms, the goal was to squeeze out investors who had sold GameStop’s shares more than they should have, and the result was GameStop’s stock price skyrocketing to prices much higher than many expected.
The meteoric rise of GME has been made even more notable by the fact that GameStop has been struggling in recent years – and this was only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although GME started the year at around $ 17 per share, the stock eventually peaked below $ 350 in late January, and today not only remains at a high price – $ 194.50 at the time that this article was written – but it also looks like it remains quite volatile. We should also thank WallStreetBets for the name of this skin, since subreddit users constantly said that those who owned GME shares should have “diamond hands” and refuse to sell, despite this volatility and uncertainty.
So, if you’re a fan of Stonks Guy, now you can live the meme in Fortnite. We are not sure how long the Diamond Hanz skin will be available, but we think that, being a April Fool’s joke, it will not be around for long.
