The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV features all electric rivals they should steal

GMC’s new Hummer EV 2024 SUV may lend the mark of a notorious gas drinker, but the automaker is making the most of its electric architecture for some features that other electric vehicles could do worse than borrow. Revealed over the weekend, the SUV version of the 2022 Hummer EV pickup maintains a bold style, but closes off the cargo area.

Below is GM’s Ultium platform, with two or three electric motors. The result is up to 830 horsepower, depending on the model, and the GMC quotes up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque. This, however, is the torque at the wheel, so you can’t really compare it to the engine torque cited in most other vehicles.

Still, 0-60 mph in about 3.5 seconds – if you choose the Watts To Freedom option – shouldn’t be overlooked, especially considering that we are talking about a vehicle that is almost 197 inches long. This makes the Hummer EV SUV a little shorter than the pickup version, which is only 217 inches, although there is less than a 9-inch difference in wheelbase between the two.

You get 16 inches of ground clearance and 32 inches of water crossing depth. At 93.7 inches wide with the mirrors, this is no small EV, but the GMC has a few tricks to make it a little easier to handle. Particularly, we are grateful to see, when you are in tighter urban situations.

One of the most useful will be the 4 Wheel Steer with CrabWalk. Standard on the Hummer EV SUV 2X, 3X and Edition 1 finishes, basically means that the front and rear wheels can turn.

With the rear wheels facing away from the front, the Hummer EV SUV has a turning circle of 35.4 feet. That’s less than a 2021 Corvette C8 Stingray, at 36.4 feet.

In CrabWalk mode, however, the rear wheels rotate in conjunction with the front wheels. This means that the Hummer EV SUV can track diagonally, whether to enter and exit parking spaces more easily or to navigate narrower off-road trails. These are features that we would love to see introduced in all vehicles, frankly.

Another thing that every EV should really offer at the moment is mobile power. GMC’s Power Station Generator allows the 20-module double-stack Ultium battery – which the automaker says will deliver more than 300 miles of EPA range, once completed – to be used as a huge portable battery for other devices, or even other EVs. One option, it will be able to supply up to 6 kW of power 240v / 25A for other EVs, or up to 3 kW of power 120v / 25A for anything that plugs into a standard outlet.

The Power Station Generator option will be available on the Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 of model year 2024, EV3X and EV2X, says GMC, and with late availability starting on the EV3X and EV2X Hummer EV Pickup of model year 2024. No word on the option price on this phase.

Finally, there is no lack of sensors. GMC packed the Hummer EV SUV with up to 14 camera views in the HD Surround Vision package and up to 17 views in the Extreme Off-Road package when you add the cameras under the body. This means a complete view around and under the SUV from the 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, as useful in tight parking lots as it is off-road.

If it’s space, not speed, that worries you, you’ll be happy to know that there’s up to 81.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. More storage space is under the cargo floor and in a compartment built into the side trim, and there is a 48-inch wide revolving rear door to access everything. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the spring of 2023.
