PIETERMARITZBURG ADVISER WANTS PRISONER MASS PROBE ESCAPE FROM TRUCK

At least 31 of the 45 prisoners awaiting trial managed to escape a police vehicle after it was stopped by five heavily armed men. The police managed to arrest 13 prisoners again after a hunt, but 18 are still at large.

DURBAN – A local councilor in Pietermaritzburg, where prisoners escaped from a police truck on Wednesday, is calling for an investigation into possible police negligence.

At least 31 of the 45 prisoners awaiting trial managed to escape from a police vehicle after it was stopped by five heavily armed men.

The police managed to arrest 13 prisoners again after a hunt, but 18 are still at large.

Councilor Ross Strachan said the incident was suspect.

The police said two policemen were confronted by five armed suspects, who instructed them to open the back of a state-owned truck and free the detainees.

Strachan said the ease with which the prisoners appeared to have escaped was worrying.

“I wonder if there was a train that managed to follow and be in front of this vehicle to ensure the safety of community members and residents of that area and through the city to the Supreme Court. Until these questions are answered, I want to appeal to residents of the community to stay safe while these prisoners are on the loose. “

Meanwhile, police said efforts were continuing to track prisoners who were still at large.
