Nomad’s Base Station Pro Qi wireless charger houses multiple Aira FreePower charging coils that allow for a slim design without compromising performance. Its design helps to waste less energy and generate less excess heat compared to most other options.
My colleague Chaim Gartenberg evaluated the Base Station Pro when it launched in August 2020. What makes it different from most other Qi wireless charging blocks are the Aira FreePower coils, which allow a better connection to the charging coil itself your device. Traditional coils tend to generate more energy and heat than needed to recharge their technology, but this is another way that Aira’s technology inside the Base Station Pro differs. Chaim states in his analysis that “it is practically impossible not to notice when you put the phone down”.
There are a few things you should know before diving into this business: if you are charging, say, an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time, they will recharge at 5W, which is the slowest speed standard. With just one iPhone, it can reach up to 7.5W. However, anything else (even Android devices that support fast Qi charging) will be limited to 5W. Finally, Nomad says on the product page that the MagSafe magnets integrated into the iPhone 12 series dramatically reduce the charging efficiency of the Base Station Pro. He expects the iPhone 12 mini to recharge in about eight hours, with the iPhone 12 Pro Max bigger taking about nine and a half hours.
