MetaHuman Creator: Did Epic just leap the Uncanny Valley?

Epic has just revealed a software and system related to the Unreal Engine called MetaHuman Creator. This system allows users to create “truly convincing digital humans”. This software is broadcast in the cloud and designed to “take digital human creation in real time from weeks or months to less than an hour.”

This project works with “an ever-growing library of variants of human appearance and movement”. Using a set of predefined faces from the MetaHuman database, users will be able to make adjustments and “sculpt and create the result you want”. Each time an adjustment is made, MetaHuman Creator combines the examples in its library “in a plausible and data-restricted way”.

Once a body is created, users will be able to download the asset as a Maya file via Quixel Bridge. When downloaded, the result will be fully manipulated (for 3D animation movement) and ready for motion capture.

The downloaded file will include source data, including skeleton, facial structure, meshes (can probably be converted to 3D printing!), Materials and animation controls. The manual keyframe is in development, as well as support for a wide variety of third-party software names.

Epic suggested that they are working with vendors to make support a reality for the following: Cubic Motion, Speech Graphics, JALI, Faceware, Dynamixyz, Digital Domain, ARKit and DI4D. They also named the Unreal Engine Live Link Face iOS app as an initial connection.

To gain access to MetaHuman Creator, you must go to the Epic registration page. There, they will provide you with the text boxes you will need to fill in to sign up for an early registration.

NOTE: Overcoming the Supernatural Valley is a kind of subjective goal. These creations look very convincing in static captures – but they will still need some post-production work to look real in video form. This shouldn’t be too difficult, especially given the key that most producers seem to forget: if you’re trying to make someone believe that a MetaHuman video is not digital, don’t tell them it’s digital from the start. go.
