What is the COSMOS Summer Program?

Established in 1998 by the California legislature, the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) gained popularity over time. COSMOS is a four-week California-based summer residential program for students interested in developing careers in STEM fields. 

They aim to nurture the next generation of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. The program also aims to connect high school students with a network of academics, industry leaders, and research facilities. 

In fact, everyone from those who will be 9th graders through folks who will be in 12th graders are all welcome to apply. COSMOS primarily caters to students who live in the state of California, although they can admit up to 20 out-of-state students each year.    

What’s more, admitted participants can expect to meet mentors like faculty, researchers, and scientists. So, you can expect to explore niche and advanced STEM topics that you haven’t explored in school before through project-based labs. 

Additionally, participants pick up new techniques, technical process know-how, and learn about new emerging applications across different industries beyond the usual spread available at school.  

What to Expect from a COSMOS Summer Program

The COSMOS curriculum covers a range of topics. For instance, you can learn about almost any STEM subject. You can expect:

• A variety of academic courses called clusters, across 4 University of California campuses.  
• Clusters are distributed across UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Cruz
• Courses are taught by UC faculty and researchers.  
• Students engage hands-on labs, field activity, lectures, and group discussion.  
• Students work on research projects.  
• Expect about 18-24 students per cluster.  
• Clusters topics from quantum mechanics to skeletal growth and repair; plus, a plethora of specific STEM topics are available.

Who Gets into the COSMOS Summer Program?  

Each of the 4 participating UC campuses can accommodate about 160-200 participants, so selection is competitive. In fact, a competitive COSMOS candidate has a GPA of 3.5 or above. In making admission decisions, COSMOS admissions officers consider  the following factors:

• Good grades, particularly in math and science courses
• Math, science, STEM teacher recommendations
• A personal and thoughtful, humanized response to the personal essay question

In order to succeed, I recommend asking your STEM teachers to write your rec letters. Also, we recommend you submit the optional second rec letter. Essentially, go the extra mile!

Applicants can expect to hear whether or not they were admitted to the COSMOS Program on by late March.  

Associated Costs of COSMOS

• For In-state (California) students:   $4,128
• For Out-of-state students: $6,500
• Out of state applicants are not eligible for financial aid.  

Financial aid application is available for reduced tuition; but, for California students only. Supporting documents are due with the rest of your application – so, you can expect the same deadline.  

To apply for financial aid, you’ll need to gather: 

• Gross annual family income 
• Total number of dependents 
• A tax transcript from the IRS of copies of a 1040

Reduced tuition covers four weeks of dorm lodging, daily meals, and all materials. Additionally, admission is need-blind, meaning applying for financial aid won’t affect your chances of being selected.

Since COSMOS is not free, and carries a hefty price tag especially for out-of-state applicants who don’t qualify to apply for financial aid, the college admissions impact for just being admitted and participating is modest.

Say for instance you continue to work with the grad students or professors you met through COSMOS throughout fall and winter to further develop the research you started over the summer.

I Didn’t Get into COSMOS. What Do I Do Now?    

If you don’t gain admission, you can try to simulate the experience. In other words, you can participate in similar programming on your own to parallel the COSMOS summer program benefits. Plus, you might get bonus points for independent initiative, resilience, and growth mindset!

In fact, independent research conducted with a college professor or grad students is incredibly valuable for STEM-bound applicants. Independent or group research that results in a published journal paper (where the student is mentioned as a co-author, or even credited as a research assistant) is a huge achievement. As COSMOS immerses students in research, you can create that opportunity for yourself!  

Aim to pursue a research topic that will match up with the STEM field that you plan to pursue as a major. You may need to cold email several professors and/or lab directors at universities before you get a response that your research assistance is needed. As a result, we recommend you cast a wide net, and don’t be disheartened. 

Create and use a virtual bulletin board to keep track of emails you’ve sent, and set deadlines within board cards for when you should follow up on the thread or escalate by calling the department and leaving a message with the department secretary.  

Present at a Conference

You can bookmark the IEMS conference, which happens annually in March in Clearwater, Florida. This conference accepts high school students in the fields of Industry, Engineering, Management Systems, and related STEM fields. Not only that, IEMS hosts professors and scholars in Industrial Engineering, and branches out into related applied fields and industries. On the whole, the conference directors believe in preparing and empowering high school students to share their innovations and network with other academics. Additionally, if permitted, finalists are invited to a four-day all-expenses paid trip to MIT’s campus, where they tour labs, present their research to MIT students and faculty and hang out with members of the THINK team.

5. Pediatrics Internship Program at Stanford (PIPS)

The Pediatrics Internship Program at Stanford (PIPS) is a 6-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to learn about science, medicine, and research with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students, and researchers on a medically-oriented project. 

The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing the diversity of students and researchers in the sciences.

• Age Eligibility: “Currently be rising juniors or seniors, 16 years old or older by the start of the program, and live in Northern California, ideally no more than a 1-hour commute from the Stanford campus.”

6. UCSF Program for Investigation and Training for Centers in Health (PITCH)

SIP is a summer-long research internship program for high-school students in STEM fields. UCSC faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers provide one-on-one mentoring for these high-school interns. The research projects are real in that they are not made up just for high-school students; instead, students are inserted into existing research projects here at UCSC.

• Location: Santa Cruz, CA
• Age Eligibility: Must be 14 (or 16 for some projects) and currently enrolled in high school.

For example, over 9,500 students applied to Penn through the Early Decision Program—an increase from last year’s total of over 8,500 applications. NYU received approximately 25,000 early applications, an increase of approximately 10% over last year. Duke received a record 6,627 early applications for the Class of 2025, representing an 8% increase over the previous year. Notre Dame reviewed a record 12,917 early applications, a 16% increase from the prior year.

Other institutions saw rates plateau since reintroducing test requirements. Columbia saw a 2.28% decrease in applications while Yale reported a 14% decrease in early applications. Dartmouth application numbers remained steady,  receiving 3,550 applications this year, on par with last year.

Eliminating legacy preferences 

Some institutions have eliminated legacy preferences since the Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action including Wesleyan, Carleton College, Occidental College, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and University of Pittsburgh. A recent report by think-tank Education Reform Now, found that more than half of the colleges and universities that once gave an admissions preference to the relatives of alumni have stopped doing so in the past decade.

First-gen students account for a large share of early admissions

In seeking new ways to diversify their incoming cohort, many schools have sought to secure the talents of first-generation students. At Brown, Barnard, and Dartmouth, close to 20% of early admitted students will be the first in their families to attend college. Similarly at Duke, 15% of early admitted applicants come from first-generation backgrounds.

The Scoop on This Year’s Admissions Results, According to the Experts

National news hints at an emerging teen crisis as college results pour in. As quoted by CNBC, Connie recommends anxious students try “to take some of the focus off the prestige and name brand” and “research schools and programs based on other factors,” she said. Even if you don’t get the acceptance letters you originally hoped for, there may still be other great options for you out there, she reminds students.

Reflecting upon this year’s admissions results, Empowerly Counselor Connie brought up the overall admissions landscape as a necessary context. She shared that the acceptance rates and class results were “amazing,” especially considering the Early Decision (ED) round was so tough. More people were rejected this year from the early pools instead of deferred, she added. With that in mind, our students’ admissions results make a strong statement.

Looking for STEM high school summer programs to keep busy during the upcoming vacation? For those of you who have a passion for learning more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, we have a lot of options. First, we’ll go over the basics of what makes a top summer program on our roundup list. Then, we will take a deeper dive into our recommendations for high school summer programs in STEM. Read on for tips on how to level up your entire summer!

So, what does “summer program” mean exactly? Doesn’t that include anything you do during the summer?

Yes and no. You don’t have to rush out and sign up for a hyper-competitive boot camp in order to make the most of your summer if that’s not your thing. However, having some form of credibilities like a transcript, certification, or award helps college admissions officers confirm what you have done. For this article, we’ll focus on structured programming. 

Most summer programs for high school students are organized and hosted by universities. Programmatically, you can expect some classroom learning and coursework, and some project-based learning, too. Summer research programs provide opportunities for learning how to read peer-reviewed, published scientific research, and learning to collect and analyze data. Additionally, these programs will introduce how to use statistical or analytics software specific to the niche industry.

What makes a summer program great? Or, at least worthwhile?

Some programs guide you toward starting and finishing a tangible research product, or help you build those relationship foundations so that you can easily maintain your research work throughout the upcoming school year—and by all means,  seize that opportunity. [For example, a business program like MIT’s LaunchX is all about coaching your entrepreneurial idea and helping you create an effective pitch, and practice its delivery.] Other programs might fold in field trips around the community and high profile guest lecturers like notable program alumni.

Ultimately, building on the project you started during your summer program, throughout your fall and winter semesters is an excellent way to evolve your project. To receive recognition for your effort, you should submit your findings to academic competitions, or academic conferences, or earn a mention as a contributor in the final published work.
