Prominent German philosopher Juergen Habermas says he will not accept an expensive UAE literary award, which he initially said he would be happy to receive
Prominent German philosopher Juergen Habermas said on Sunday that he would not accept an expensive UAE literary award, reversing an earlier decision.
The 91-year-old man, considered Germany’s most eminent contemporary philosopher, told German news site Spiegel Online that “I have declared my willingness to accept this year’s Sheikh Zayed Book Award. That was a wrong decision, which I correct through this one. “
In the statement, which his editor Suhrkamp Verlag passed on to Spiegel Online, Habermas added, “I have not made it clear enough to myself that the institution, which awards these awards in Abu Dhabi, is very close to the political system that exists there. “
On the home page of the Zayed Book Award, it is written that Habermas was elected “Cultural Person of the Year” 2021 in recognition of a long career spanning more than half a century.
He says that the winners in each of the eight award categories receive a prize of 750,000 UAE dirhams (US $ 204,200).
