Johannesburg – Four people in a VW sedan burned beyond recognition when their vehicle crashed head-on with a Honda sedan.
The incident happened on Friday afternoon on the R50 between Leandra and Standerton in Mpumalanga.
Mpumalanga Department of Community Security spokesman Moeti Mmusi said the cause of the accident was not yet known, although it was suspected that one of the drivers might be overtaking when it was not safe to do so.
“The VW sedan caught fire on impact and the deceased was burnt beyond recognition
“Three more people, including the driver and two passengers of the Honda sedan, were seriously injured.
“The investigation of the accident is already underway. However, it is suspected that one of the drivers may have overtaken dangerously, ”said Moeti.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Vusi Shongwe called on drivers to be cautious on the road to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
He said drivers should exercise due care and diligence, especially when driving long distances.
On Friday, a pedestrian died and two others, including a child, were injured after being hit by a car in Westbury, Johannesburg.
The ER24 said its paramedics arrived on the scene shortly before 4 pm and found that the woman had already died.
“A 1-year-old child was found to have suffered serious injuries. The child was treated at the scene before being transported by the ambulance staff to the hospital in critical condition.
A girl, believed to be 11, suffered moderate injuries. She was treated on the spot before being transported to the hospital for further medical care.
