AYA-NEO puts a different spin on the PC gaming handheld

Now, the idea of a Windows portable computer is not new, but its implementations are still rare. The first models, mainly the GPD, had to settle for less powerful Intel Atoms or, later, more robust Intel cores that were not yet made for games. It was only with the 11th generation Intel processors with Iris Xe graphics that PC gaming handhelds may have started to have a chance, but AYA-NEO is taking a different path towards the portable gaming PC’s goal.

AYA-NEO follows the Nintendo Switch, or rather, the Nintendo Switch Lite with its controllers permanently connected flanking the screen. This was the same design adopted by GPD WIN 3, which just ended its own crowdfunding run. The main difference in design is that WIN 3 used a sliding mechanism to reveal a capacitive keyboard that, based on previous analysis, was more of a handicap than a winning feature, an intentional pun.

The differences are profound, however, and AYA-NEO has another defining characteristic. It runs on an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U that, among other things, comes with a Radeon mobile graphics processor. Naturally, AYA-NEO prides itself on the ability to run games that would not otherwise run on Intel-only silicon. this includes the infamous Cyberpunk 2077, although only at 30 fps.

The AYA-NEO also has a larger 7-inch screen, but only with a resolution of 1280 × 800. In addition to the usual buttons on the game controller, it also has shortcuts for some keyboard combos and keys needed for some PC games. With gyroscope and accelerometer sensors, the entire handheld device can also be used to control games or perhaps rotate the screen to other games and applications.

For about $ 790 for the base 512 GB model from Indiegogo, the AYA-NEO is a very robust investment. The campaign is also offering add-ons like a dock that will transform the gaming PC into a real desktop with the right peripherals. The campaign exceeded its funding goals with 28 days off, but, as with any crowdfunding product, it will take faith and patience before the final item is delivered to your door.
