There are some companies that are testing the waters when it comes to folding phones, and it may not be long before we see Apple join them. A new analyst report today states that Apple could launch its own foldable phone in just a few years. Among other things, this phone is expected to have a flexible 8-inch OLED display.
This is what the famous Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, says in a recent note to investors, obtained by MacRumos staff. Kuo expects Apple to launch that 8-inch foldable smartphone in 2023, and he also expects Apple to recruit Samsung Display as “the exclusive supplier of monitors” and Samsung Foundry “as the exclusive supplier of DDI foundry”.
Kuo also made some predictions about the phone itself, saying it will be output in FHD + resolution and will use TPK’s silver nanowire touch technology, which could be the best choice for multi-fold smartphones over Y-Octa technology Samsung screen. Based on Apple’s “request capacity plan”, Kuo also believes that the company will ship 15-20 million foldable smartphones in 2023 – the same year that he expects the launch of this phone – so it’s clear that he hopes let this phone be a hit outside the gate.
It is worth noting that Kuo also envisions a future where “folding devices will confuse product segmentations between smartphones, tablets and laptops”, and that Apple will be prepared to capitalize on that given its existing ecosystem of products. So it looks like there is an expectation that foldable devices will overtake their current niche and become a more ubiquitous product, fueling Kuo’s prediction here, which means that we will just have to wait and see how things go.
One thing to ask yourself is what will happen to the iPad Mini if Apple launches an 8-inch foldable iPhone. Since its inception, the iPad Mini has a 7.9-inch screen, which means that if Apple makes a foldable iPhone with the intention of bridging the gap between smartphones and tablets, it will essentially be squeezing the iPad Mini out of its niche.
For now, however, the foldable smartphone segment is still in its infancy. Kuo’s prediction that we will see Apple launching foldable devices in 2023 may indeed be bold at the present time, but if the folding market continues to grow, it is easy to imagine Apple trying to do so. We’ll see what happens from here, but as always, be sure to take rumors, reports and predictions with a grain of salt.
