Apex Legends serves up Chaos Theory event, no-fill queue alongside Switch launch

Apex Legends has a great week ahead of them. Not only will it be released on the Nintendo Switch on March 9, but it is also the date on which the Chaos Theory Collection event begins. In fact, the Switch release and the Chaos Theory event are just two parts of what appears to be a massive update that features a new game mode called Escalation Takeovers, an unfilled matchmaking mode and a series of game changes.

While most of us already know the Switch version, it’s worth keeping in mind that those who start the game on Switch between the March 9 release date and the end of the current season (which is season 8) will receive a skin special pathfinder. Likewise, those who are buying the Battle Pass on the Season 8 Switch will gain 30 levels for free, as they will have less time to level up the Battle Pass completely.

In a blog post on the Apex Legends website, Respawn also revealed that Caustic will take control of the Water Treatment Plant – a development that sent Mirage Voyage to find a different place to drop its anchor. Respawn suggests that we will see Mirage Voyage appear in other areas of the map, so stay tuned while playing.

Players also have a new playlist called Ring Fury Escalation Takeover. Here, you will see one or more Ring Flares appear on the map at random, along with the current ring. If you find yourself in one of these Ring Flares, you are in trouble, because it will deal damage equal to the amount caused by the Ring of the current round. Fortunately, you’ll have a new item to keep you safe: the heat shield.

Heat Shields can be deployed to Ring Flares to give you some time to loot or heal before trying to get out of the flare. Healing will progress 50% faster when healing items are used in a heat shield that is in an active Ring Flare, while revival will be 25% faster. The Ring Flare will cause damage to the Heat Shield over time, so this is something to keep in mind – this is only a temporary cover of the Ring’s danger.

Heat Shields will also occupy a new item slot in your inventory called Survival Slot, so you don’t have to worry about it taking up space that you would normally reserve for ammo, items or armor. The Survival Slot is intended for “situational utilities” like Heat Shield and Mobile Respawn, so essentially, its introduction means that you can now load one of them all the time.

Next, we have the introduction of the unfilled combination, which gives players the option of not filling their group with random players when they line up for a match. Basically, it allows you to enter games of duos or trios as a solo player, or games of trios as a duo. Fans have been asking for a dedicated solo mode since Apex Legends was first announced, and although it gets us there, it also makes the game a lot more difficult for solo players, as they will be facing teams of two or three players as well.

Of course, the Chaos Theory Gathering Event will have a reward trail for working your way up, and you will do so by completing daily challenges during the event. You can access the Apex Legends blog post at the link above for more details on rewards, Legends updates, changes in quality of life and bug fixes submitted with this update. The Chaos Theory Collection Event, meanwhile, will take place from 9 to 23 March.
